Photosynthetic Image Generation (P.I.G.) plates

An experimental combination of printmaking and photography cultivates photosynthetic organisms under a thin film of water and glass. The process works by exposing cyanobacteria to light through the image plate. The plate and its imagery are made by printing and fusing subsequent layers of black powdered glass onto a flat sheet of transparent glass. The result is a high relief topographic formation of gritty, chemically inert, porous shapes; and a perfect habitat for microbial life.
